If you have read my Good Grandpa book, you’re familiar with the wonderful story shared with me by Bob Staranowicz, a grandpa and Vietnam combat veteran.

During Bob’s tour of duty in the war, Bob tagged along with a buddy one day to bring laundry for cleaning by the Catholic nuns who run the Kim Long Orphanage in Hue, Vietnam. The kids welcomed him in, joyously, and over time through many visits he befriended them. Bob organized a fund drive back in Philly for the orphanage, work that continues to this day. I’ve made donations, and you are welcome to join me and the many others who’ve gotten behind Bob’s efforts.

Vietnam doesn’t have the same kind of non-profit structures we have in America, so Bob gathers checks from donors in an account and sends a lump sum to the orphanage each year. In 2025, Bob wired $4500 to Sister Chantal, equating to about 118 million Vietnam Dong. This will go a long way towards feeding and clothing the many children there.
